fuki-e 吹き絵

A technique to create tints by placing a cut-out pattern on paper and scraping paint through a wire mesh with a brush, causing the paint to be spattered or sprayed onto the area not covered by the cut-out. This technique can be seen on pieces of paper and screens preserved in the *Shousouin 正倉院 and as decorative effects on prints produced in the Edo period.
