Red lead. A crimson red pigment *ganryou Šη—Ώ produced from lead oxide Pb O. Entan has a yellowish-red colour which changes to purplish-brown and then to grey when exposed to air. Its earliest use in Japan is not known, but examples of entan in murals survive from the 7c, including the mural in Nara's Houryuuji *Kondou –@—²Ž›‹ΰ“° showing Amida Nyorai ˆ’–ν‘Ι”@—ˆ. Entan, *shu Žι and red earth pigment *bengara •Ω•Ώ are the most important red mineral-based paints *iwa-enogu ŠβŠG‹ο found in Japanese painting *nihonga “ϊ–{‰ζ, and are still used today.
