egami 絵紙
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

1 A generic term for paper used for painting. In general, strong paper with a minimal tendency to blur such as *torinokogami 鳥の子紙, is preferred for traditional Japanese style painting *yamato-e やまと絵 rather than the type of paper which originated in China, such as *karakami 唐紙 and *gasenshi 画仙紙, which were used for ink painting *suibokuga 水墨画 and southern painting *nanga 南画. They were fragile but moist, and a lot of interesting ink effects could be achieved.

2 Colored, sometimes patterned paper used for children's games.
