edogawara 江戸瓦
KEY WORD : architecture / roofing tiles

An archaic term for tiles of low quality used in Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo period to roof tenement houses *nagaya 長屋. These were dwellings set in a row with a common wall dividing each family's living space from another's. Often called terrace houses today. The Edo tile sizes were smaller than those used for the same purpose in Osaka.
