dotome-ita 土留板

Also read dodome-ita, and called *seki-ita 堰板. The sheathing boards placed between vertical supporting posts or palings which are held by horizontal timbers to prevent excavated ground from collapsing back into trenches dug out to set the foundation stones. These boards are placed just far enough away from the excavations or trenches to prevent their edges from being broken by downward pressure from the piled up soil.
