doroji 泥地

A technique where a mixture of animal glue *nikawa 膠 and powdered burnt clay *tonoko 砥粉 is painted onto a statue to provide a ground before applying colours. Lime dissolved in nikawa is sometimes used for the same purpose (also referred to as doroji).
