Lit. layered pruning. A basic type of pruning *karikomi 刈込. When used for a large clipped hedge ookarikomi 大刈込, this technique refers to single bushes or trees pruned into multiple layers. For instance, three-layered pine, sangaimatsu 三蓋松, and five-layered pine, gogaimatsu 五蓋松, are good examples. In regard to kokarikomi 小刈込, dankarikomi means a hedge clipped into two or more layers.
