BUNCHOU GADAN 文晁画談
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Bunchou's Treatise on Painting, an early 18c miscellany on painters, painting techniques, tools, and subjects by connoisseur and artist Tani Bunchou 谷文晁 (1763-1840). Published ca. 1811, BUNCHOU GADAN ranges from sophisticated arguments distinguishing between obscure old painters to more conventional discussions of painting methods. A dedicated student of old Japanese paintings, Bunchou wrote and illustrated numerous books on paintings including GAGAKUSAI KAGANZUKOU 画学斎過眼図藁 (Gagakusai's Sketches of Seen Pictures), BUNCHOU ZATSUROKUCHOU 文兆雑録帳 (Bunchou's Miscellaneous Records), and HONCHOU GASAN 本朝画纂 (Collection of Japanese Painting), in addition to illustrating the 85 volume inventory of national treasures *SHUUKO JISSHU 集古十種 published in 1800 (Kansei 寛政 4).
