biseki 尾石

Lit. tail stone. A stone in a rock garden that represents the tail of a tortoise *kamejima 亀島, or the tail of a crane in a rock arrangement representing the crane *tsurujima 鶴島. The same characters may be read o-ishi, and are sometimes also called osaki-ishi 尾崎石.
