KEY WORD :@art history / paintings
@
Lit. later seal. An artist's seal placed posthumously on a painting or calligraphy, sometimes by a well-meaning person related to the artist, meant to authenticate his/her unsigned work. More commonly, an ato-in was added by an unscrupulous person to camouflage the seal of a lesser artist after erasing the original seal.
