KEY WORD : architecture / gardens

Lit. growing together. The technique of planting two trees so that they grow together. Variations include: the same kind of tree, one tree large and the other small; different but related trees, such as black pine, kuromatsu 黒松, and red pine, akamatsu 赤松; and completely different kinds of trees. Related to the aioi technique is the practice of training the trunks of a single tree to grow so that they appear to be two different trees that are growing together.
