  • Research Presentations for Fiscal Year 2001

The research presentations of the 12 recipients for fiscal year 2001 were held last Saturday, March 2, 2001 at the Atsumi Foundation. The foundation's final activity for this year, the meeting was successfully concluded thanks to the participation of the current and next batch of scholarship recipients, the members of Raccoon-Kai (alumni association), the professors of some presenters, the foundation's directors, and those who provide assistance for international students in Japan. The presenters met with some difficulty in trying to explain, within 15 minutes, their research results in terms understandable to a child. Nevertheless, the presentations were made splendidly, Some presenters challenged using PowerPoint (Presentation Software) for the first time, but they all went very well. The presentations were followed by greetings from Dr. Hiroshi Tsuboi, the Head of Student Exchange Division, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The meeting was concluded by an invitation to the Sekiguchi Global Research Association (SGRA) by Mr. Tadahiro Shimazu, Chief of its Operation Committee. Participants all enjoyed the glasses of beer, Chinese food, Nanohana-gohan, special cuisine of Doll's Festival (March 3), as well as lively conversation.

  • Karuizawa was hot but pleasant!
  •
Escaping the terrible heat of Tokyo, Atsumi Foundation present and past scholarship recipients (members of Raccoonkai) made their annual trip to Karuizawa for two nights and three days. The participants enjoyed the customary Hanerayama hiking, watermelon bashing and fireworks, and barbecue at Rijicho's vacation house. This year the main course was Inner Mongolian barbecue, with scholarship recipients from Myanmar, China, and Korea cooking up their specialties. As always Mr. Hara, Director of Kajima Art Foundation, and his wife came all the way from Tokyo to prepare oden. For two evenings, the participants got together to talk about their concerns regarding the history text book issue, an issue which is fast becoming a serious one. This year, Karuizawa was a bit hot, but the participants enjoyed the cool breeze that frolicked amidst the green trees. (trans.Maquito)
