kyouma 京間
KEY WORD : architecture / folk dwellings

1 The standard measurement used for bay size in the Kansai 関西region, along the Inland Sea, along the San'in 山陰 area, and part of Kyuushuu 九州. A bay was considered to be the space between two pillars (not from pillar center to pillar center as in some other parts of Japan). The kyouma size, established in the late 16c, was 6.5 shaku 尺 (196.95cm). The size of floor mats *tatami 畳, also varied in different parts of Japan. The so-called Kyoto size tatami is 6.3 shaku 尺 (190.89cm) X 3.15 shaku (95.445cm), which is larger than that in the Kantou 関東 region. Also called honkyouma 本京間, honma 本間 or ooma 大間. A bay is of 6.3 shaku is sometimes called chuukyouma 中京間.

2 An abbreviation for toukyouma 東京間, a bay size measurement of 6 shaku (181.8cm).
