hinagatabon 雛形本
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Also pronounced hiinagata bon. Lit. miniature stamped book. A small-sized woodblock printed book produced during the Edo period.

1 Books containing architectural drawings of models, design techniques, and sample plans. Hinagatabon were used as reference works in house design. They contributed to the spread of standardized architectural techniques and styles from the early Edo period onward. One of the earliest examples is the SHINPEN HINAGATA 新篇雛形 of 1651.

2 A small picture book which showed color samples, textures, and patterns of clothing used when ordering kimono. In particular, the word hinagatabon often referred to a printed book which recorded the patterns of kosode 小袖, a padded silk garment worn during the Edo period. A picture of a popular pattern was drawn in the shape of a kosode on each page. Early hinagatabon of the 1670's were small, about half Mino sized (minoban 美濃判, 200 x 280mm). From about 1680 to 1715 hinagatabon were produced either in the size of oobon 大本 (large books, which were larger than Mino) or of hanshibon 半紙本 (often produced from sheets of *hanshi 半紙 paper, 165 x 235mm. These were produced singly or in sets of two booklets. A set of half-sized Mino in a three booklet set finally came into being in the mid- 18c. Most of these books were published solely in Kyoto. Early examples were black and white with color added later but after 1780 color printing on thick, high quality paper appeared. Hinagatabon were produced by dyers such as Miyazaki Yuuzen 宮崎友禅 (?-1758) and Hishikawa Morofusa 菱川師房 (fl. 1685-1703) who also worked on *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 prints. Ukiyo-e artists producing these books include Hishikawa Moronobu 菱川師宣 (c.1618-94), Nishikawa Sukenobu 西川祐信 (1671-1751), Yoshida Hanbee 吉田半兵衛 (fl.c.1660-92), Imura Katsuyoshi 井村勝吉, Tachibana Morikuni 橘守国 (1679-1748) and Ebishiya Chuushichi 絵菱屋忠七 (mid-18c). Hinagatabon are important for the study of kosode fashion as well as of ukiyo-e woodblock printing techniques and artists.
